Q:

Bathroom Tap Is Broken - Advice Needed

Hi. I'm looking for some advice about my tap. When I turn it on it trickles and as I keep rotating it, it pour a little more, then I keep turning it and it slows down for a slow trickle to a complete stop even when turning it 'on'. The tap seems stiff. When I pull it up the water flow seems to increase.

Do I need to contact a plumber to fix or do I need a plumber to replace the whole tap unit?

Any advice would be great. Thanks everyone.

It is likely that the tap gland is broken or stuck. The galnds cost very little form any hardware store and are pretty simple to change.

Hi Neil,

From your explanation it sounds as though the tap cartridge has come lose. It is a relatively straightforward fix if you are feeling adventurous or fairly inexpensive to fix should you want to call a plumber just in case.

Where are you based Neil, is there not a plumber on here who is registered in your area that might be able to come round and have a look?!

Hi Neil
It sounds as if the tap head is clogged with limescale, you have 2 choices ;
1) Clean out and replace washers ( if its not a sealed unit)
2) Replace tap completely
Both choices can be DIY if you feel confident otherwise call a plumber

Hiya SB Builders and Electrical Services answer is spot on would recommend changing taps though I'v found repairing them with new washers and such they don't really last.

Hello Agnes, it sounds like either the washer inside the tap has become dislodged or the end of the spindle holding it may be broken. It is a common problem with old taps and sometime relatively new ones. Without taking it apart it would be impossible to say. It may just need a new washer or may require the whole tap to be replaced. I am not a qualified plumber I stress, but it would be best to have one come out to take a look to rectify the problem. I hope this helps you a little. Kind regards Simon
