I hope I can get a response here as posted in two forums and got nothing back. My boiler yesterday started making a sound I can only describe as a screeching / screaming noise. Imagine an old kettle being left on the hob. I had a bad experience with my gas fitter and do not want to call him back. I am prepared to call someone new but would like to sound like I have a clue before doing so. What can this be? Does it need a gas fitter? Nothing has changed to make it all of a sudden do this except I changed a bathroom tap the day before and turned the stop cock off to do so. Any advice would be great.

hi
If its pressurised system firstly check the system pressure this should be a minimum of 1 bar cold on the pressure gauge , if its a conventional system with a small tank feeding the heating system in the roof check the ballvalve isn't stuck or blocked and there is water in the tank , its sounds like a pump problem to me but could also be a thermostat problem causing kettling within the boiler or a blockage in the heat exchanger but my guess would be the pump on its way out , don't try to tackle it your self call out a gas safe company within your area and get it looked at properly but only use a gas safe
engineer. if the pump is built into the boiler itself it is very close to some of the gas controls a plumber is not good enough unless fully trained there hands should not be within the boiler casing, if the pumps in the airing cupboard that's different
hope this helps clive o

By no means am i a heating engineer but i have had similar noises from my own boiler in my house when the pressure was low... As already suggested it is definitely worth checking the pressure and if needed top up the system before calling someone out.

Hello firstly if you've messed with main stop tap it might need another turn, also sometimes the pump can be a reason for boiling noises, and yes it needs a plumber minimum or Gas engineer depending on system or combi, check your pressure gauge, is it empty?
If it is your boiler, gas safe only engineer .
hope this helps
Ciao
